The school curriculum includes the six Key Learning Areas prescribed by the New South Wales Board of Studies: English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and Its Environment, Creative and Practical Arts and Physical Education, Health and Personal Development.
The curriculum is carefully structured to cater for the diverse academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of our students. We place strong emphasis on providing an all round education.
Literacy is essential for all formal learning and at St Peter's there is a strong emphasis on attaining the highest levels very early in the primary years.
From the beginning of Kindergarten there is a rigorous and methodical approach to the teaching of reading and writing including the use of phonics and spelling.
In recognition that children have different learning requirements and rates of progress, we provide extension classes for more able students and literacy support for children who may require additional help.
Mathematics is a particular strength in the school. Mathematics is taught in ability groups across the grade from Year 2, allowing more students to be extended well beyond the normal grade expectations.
Numeracy support is available to students who experience learning difficulties with this subject.
To encourage all students to become self-disciplined in study techniques, homework starts in Kindergarten and the amount of homework is gradually increased through the years to enhance these skills.
Most children in Years 3 - 6 are involved in the Australian English, Mathematics and Science Competitions.
All Years 3 and 5 students undertake the NAPLAN Literacy and Numeracy National Assessment.
